I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that I was voted Best Mixed Media Textiles Artist of 2023 by LUXlife Magazine in their annual Perfect Gift Awards. (Click here to read the article)
LUXlife first contacted me in the Spring to notify me of my nomination for the award. To be totally honest, when I first saw the email pop up in my inbox, I assumed it was spam.
Now —I’m not saying that because I’m not proud of my work: I’m delighted by these unplanned pieces that come through me, and they look better in person than I can often capture in this 2D space. I show my work as often as I can, and I’m delighted when I hear your feedback.
Most of the time, I’m not able to be there with my work when it’s being shown, though I treasure the times where I can witness other people get lost in it first-hand. Occasionally I’ll see someone admire from a distance, then slowly, with curiosity, creep forward to observe the details. The most curious will get real close to figure out how I put it all together, and look at all the tiny stitches.
I always encourage folks to “get in there” when I’m showing my work, though I’m not sure all the galleries I show in have the same ideology! :)
I’ve been hustling to get my art into as many shows as I can, which can be fun. That said, as a solo artist without a gallery working on my behalf, my solo reach can feel limited. When I realized that someone who saw my work nominated me for the award, it was an incredibly humbling moment.
I found out in mid-summer that I had won the award, and I’ve been keeping it as a joyful secret until now. I’m honored, and I hope that this will allow more people to discover and connect with my work.
