From Portrait to Pattern: Workshop at Quilt visions 2024
Are you curious about portraiture, but intimidated by how complex it seems? Do you have a favorite photograph that you would like to transform into textile art? Do you love illustrative work, but are worried you're not “good” enough at drawing? In this 3-hour workshop, I’ll break down some of my favorite techniques for transforming photographs into patterns, ready to be used in your next textile project. We’ll explore the importance of value, auditioning color palettes, and techniques to add your unique voice to create a work that’s truly your own. We’ll also cover tips for choosing an inspiration image, ways to scale the pattern to different sizes, and techniques for adding depth and dimension to your work. From realistic to abstract, we’ll cover it all! Students will finish the class with a pattern they’ve created from inspirational images of their choosing.
Supplies: Students should bring 2-3 reference images of their choosing, approximately 8” x 10” in size, so facial details are clearly visible. Alternatively, students may bring magazines, old calendars, or other images. (Note: I’ll also bring extra reference materials, however it’s best if students have something they’re excited to work on)
