The Tarot Series
Man of His Time (The Hanged Man), 2025
44” x 73”
Materials: Cotton, silk, bamboo
Inspired by the daguerreotype of the American abolitionist, John Brown (taken circa 1846), he has been re-imagined in textile. John Brown was the first person to be convicted of treason in the United States, and was executed by hanging in 1859. A devout Christian, he believed that it was his sacred obligation to strike a death blow against slavery, after decades of peaceful talks had failed. He incited a violent movement to liberate slaves, which ultimately lead to his conviction and sentencing.
The title “Man of His Time” is a reference to living people accepting inhumane actions of historical figures, suggesting the perpetrator is "just a man of his time.”
The artist's first work of 2025, he will join the Tarot Series of artworks as The Hanged Man.
